Beeston connects to the City centre via a wide, functional highway. Speeding traffic and parked cars make the route unpleasant for pedestrians and people living in adjoining houses. The practice proposed a transformation from road to green boulevard, creating Leeds’ version of a French Allee.
Narrowing of the highway, flush surfaces and re-organisation of parking combined with robust gravel and stone finishes, semi-mature trees and street furniture changes the road into a place. Room is created for a Sunday market, car boot sales or school fair, space is available for people to sit and children to play. Trees bring seasonal change and wildlife into the space. It is hoped that the first phase of the project will act as a catalyst for development along the remainder of the corridor.
