Estell Warren prepared masterplan options for the restoration of the 80ha former Frickley Colliery tip and colliery site, based around a community-led Countryside Park with allied leisure uses and 300 unit residential development.
Innovative landforms and vegetation treatments bring out the historic, cultural, geological and nature conservation values of the site in a contemporary and practical manner.
The commission was extended to include outline ideas for the adjoining town edge (including housing market renewal areas) aimed at integrating the restored colliery site with the wider community and turning the previously ‘inward looking’ town edge outwards to face the new country park.
The practice was involved at public consultation events throughout the course of the project, preparing exhibition material and attending events.
