Pedestrianisation and improvement of Victoria Street West in Grimsby has brought new impetus to the retail heart of the town and forms the initial phase of upgrading the town centre public realm.  In addition the street is an important part of the town centre Conservation Area.

The practice took part in public and business consultation workshops and then prepared design proposals for the street.  Paving and lighting design reflect the roots of Grimsby, referring to the towns’ vital maritime links, including a direct physical link to the North Sea, and medieval land ownership patterns, now frozen in retail facades.  High quality natural stone is used throughout, in black and white contrasting colours to offset warmer colours in the adjoining buildings.  The street is punctuated by water jets, creating a play feature outside service vehicle access times.
