Estell Warren was commissioned by Manningham Masterplan to prepare an outline masterplan design for the Grosvenor Ground Park followed by detailed design and implementation of a play area suitable for children aged 8-13 years.
Community consultation events established a desire to follow 'natural play' principles rather than provide a conventional playground. The natural play approach aims to create an environment that intertwines a high proportion of natural objects and materials - landforms, wood, water, stone, sand, earth, plants - with other play structures to create a setting for play rather than a prescribed 'playground'. Our cue for the design was taken from the undulations and hollows in the existing landform and the former presence of a sandstone quarry. Banks of wildflowers and an orchard bring seasonal colour and change to the site.
