This is the first public square to be delivered under the Remaking Barnsley Urban Renaissance programme. The space forms a setting for the restored Civic building including providing opportunities for outdoor cultural events and activities in addition to an attractive place to meet, relax, sit and play.
The challenge of the steeply sloping site resulted in the innovative concept of an 'urban outcrop', with water, edges and terraces alluding to elements of the surrounding landscape and geology. The gardens retain a strong element of greenery, providing a welcome place to relax at lunchtimes and weekends in the town centre.
