Estell Warren was commissioned to undertake an extensive study of existing open space along the River Wansbeck corridor. Proposals identified opportunities to improve or enhance the riverfront scene and its associated open spaces, introducing appropriate, innovative ‘interventions’ and improving access to and along the river; a theme that underpins the Castles, Woods & Water project.

The concept would create a three-dimensional bridge between land and water. The rivers edge would become more diverse, more inviting and more easily accessed. It would provide the opportunity to create a rich and diverse range of riverside habitats. Carlisle Park, at the centre of Morpeth, becomes the focal point of a wider 'riverside park', extending beyond the town.
