Competition entry for major public square.

St George's Square 'plugs' the Railway Station into the town and connects incoming and outgoing travellers with other modes of movement (walking, cycling, buses, cars).  The idea of ‘connection’ was our inspiration for designing the square, creating strong, practical lines of visual and physical movement through an otherwise simply treated space that will cater for major events.

Lines of paving abstract local geological strata; bands of coal and shale within a matrix of gritstone.  Some of these strata rise up from the ground plane and issue water via 'springs', creating places in the square to gather, relax and play.  At night LED lighting lift the paving pattern into a directional system through the square.
