viduct

A redundant viaduct running into the centre of was identified by the City Council as a major opportunity for improving access and greenspace within Holbeck Urban Village, close to the City centre.  Estell Warren was appointed as part of a wider architectural team to assess and design possible new uses for the top of the viaduct.

The practice devised the idea that the viaduct, a spectacular but inanimate piece of Victorian engineering, should be re-invented as an ‘Urban Reef’ or ‘Living Line’ of interwoven human, ecological and green energy systems.  Carbon fibre wands with LED lights would form an 800m long ‘slinky’ waving and moving along the length of the viaduct.  The park would provide much needed greenery and tranquillity in the centre of the City whilst creating a non-vehicular route between outlying communities and the City centre.
